Southern public schools fought long and hard to keep their proms segregated as long as they could. Once they lost the public school wars, these racist families just took their racism "private" by holding segregated cotillions at daddy's country club. Bless her heart, she had such a sad life and she brought so much joy to so many people. She was sexually abused by her step-father, she was treated like a piece of property, she had anorexia and she unfortunately was an alcoholic because of all of the stress that the studios put on her. She had a really rough marriage with Bobby Darin because she didn't know how to be an adult and he was born with a heart defect that meant he would die early. She never got a break.
